Smooth Collies share the Rough Collie's predisposition to Collie Eye Anomaly and progressive retinal atrophy, which can diminish vision in their later years. The MDR1 gene mutation makes them sensitive to certain common medications. Dermatomyositis and nasal aspergillosis are breed-specific concerns. Many families notice the awareness dimming gradually — the dog who saw everything beginning to miss things.
